OVERALL BITES:

Value: This is an area in which Casa de Don Pancho excels. Most of their meals are under $10 and they also offer a happy hour pricing on many items before 2pm.

Taste: I was more than pleasantly surprised. Every time I see a small hole in the wall location I don’t expect much and more often than not they blow me away! Yet another reason to support local businesses because the flavor at Casa de Don Pancho was spot on!!!

Presentation: Nothing incredibly special but I did love how the chips had a splash of beans and queso fresco on them. The server also brought me a salsa bottle to add to the chips.

Vibe: I was the only one in the shop but the staff was super friendly. A party of five walked in a few minutes later and they seemed to be having a great time with the server.

Accessibility: Super easy to find just North of Glendale on 35th Ave on the East side of the street. The parking lot can get a little congested because of the other shops but it’s worth navigating the small lot.

Review – Casa de Don Pancho

In Phoenix once again and once again I wanted to eat where the locals eat! I try to stay close to work for lunch and since I was close to Glendale and 35th Ave I thought I would head North. I noticed a sign for Casa de Don Pancho so I figured I would pay him a visit.

The time was roughly 2:10 or so, which means I missed their happy hour pricing, but after looking at the prices on the menu it wasn’t a big deal. Most of their meals are priced at $10 or less. The ordering counter is at the back of the restaurant which also had a fairly small dining area and a salsa bar along the South wall. After I placed my order for four Carne Asada tacos and an Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus drink) I went to the salsa bar. Unfortunately they only had a few salsas so about half of it was empty. Fortunately the two I grabbed were super tasty! A roasted pepper salsa and another light red.

I took my number and chose where to sit. My drink, which was also very tasty, was brought to me with complimentary chips and a bottle of salsa. The chips had a splash of refried beans and some queso fresco crumbled on top. It’s always nice to get something for free when you’re not expecting it but even better still when it tastes delicious!

The Tacos

After only a few minutes my tacos were brought out. They were PACKED with cabbage, a bit of onion and plenty of cilantro. The tacos had two small tortillas and were so packed with meat and the veggies you could have made two small tacos out of them. The tacos were so big I could barely wrap the tortilla around the filling! I had taken some limes from the salsa bar and squeezed them on all four of my tacos. A little splash of roasted salsa and I dug right in and….WOW!!! My mouth is watering right now just thinking about them.

Have you ever had the most amazing tacos at a taco stand? They are generous with their portions, the salsas are perfect and it leaves you feeling more than satisfied? Ok, that’s how I felt at Casa de Don Pancho. Only thing that could have been better is if Don Pancho himself would have cooked and served me himself with a sombrero and a zarape! The meat was seasoned well and the salsas complimented an already good taco.

Casa de Don Pancho gets 4.5 Bites!!! The location was clean, the food was great, the four tacos were more than enough and the complimentary chips with beans was a very nice cherry on top. They could have filled the entire salsa bar. If anything with smaller containers so they wouldn’t have to make so much of a few.
